چکیده

Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) was first described in the second century by Antyllus, who surgically ligated the proximal and distal ends of the aneurysm. The modern treatment of AAA began with the first AAA replacement using a homograft in 1951. Since that time, the screening, diagnostic method, surveillance, and treatment of AAA have been very well studied and incorporated into a modern paradigm of care. The results of this work is the dramatic reduction in aneurysm-related mortality for patients who maintain care and contact with a healthcare provider. Indeed, in patients found to have an infrarenal aorta of 4 cm in diameter, aneurysm rupture or repair is the number 4 cause of death behind other cardiovascular, cancer, and lung disease, representing 6% to 8% of the total mortality.

High Structural Stress and Presence of Intraluminal Thrombus Predict Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm 18F-FDG Uptake: Insights From Biomechanics.

BACKGROUND Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) wall inflammation and mechanical structural stress may influence AAA expansion and lead to rupture. We hypothesized a positive correlation between structural stress and fluorine-18-labeled 2-deoxy-2-fluoro-d-glucose (18F-FDG) positron emission tomography-defined inflammation. We also explored the influence of computed tomography-derived aneurysm morpho...

Multifactorial relationship between 18F-fluoro-deoxy-glucose positron emission tomography signaling and biomechanical properties in unruptured aortic aneurysms.

BACKGROUND The relationship between biomechanical properties and biological activities in aortic aneurysms was investigated with finite element simulations and 18F-fluoro-deoxy-glucose (18F-FDG) positron emission tomography. METHODS AND RESULTS The study included 53 patients (45 men) with aortic aneurysms, 47 infrarenal (abdominal aortic) and 6 thoracic (thoracic aortic), who had ≥1 18F-FDG p...

Positron emission tomography (PET) imaging with (18)F-based radiotracers.

Positron Emission Tomography (PET) is a nuclear medicine imaging technique that is widely used in early detection and treatment follow up of many diseases, including cancer. This modality requires positron-emitting isotope labeled biomolecules, which are synthesized prior to perform imaging studies. Fluorine-18 is one of the several isotopes of fluorine that is routinely used in radiolabeling o...

High Structural Stress and Presence of Intraluminal Thrombus Predict Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm 18F-FDG Uptake

Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is a localized enlargement of the aorta, conventionally diagnosed when the maximum anteroposterior vessel diameter exceeds 3.0 cm. AAAs are most prevalent in elderly men and are frequently asymptomatic until point of rupture, which is the catastrophic failure of the aneurysmal wall associated with an overall mortality rate between 65% and 85%. Current management ...
